Clear Your Emotional Clutter

“Get rid of clutter and you may just find that it was blocking the door you’ve been looking for”

—Katrina Mayer

As the snow melts, hellebore, daffodil, and iris shoots have appeared in my garden. Seeing them brings a smile to my heart. The crisp breeze is refreshing, no longer freezing. The early days of spring draw near.

Next month, landscapers will begin their work clearing out the beds to make space for new growth. I look forward to warmer days when I can open the windows and fill my home with a breath of fresh air.

In anticipation of spring, this month’s Sunday Soulful, Clear Your Emotional Clutter, will help you begin a spring cleaning process. This month we will have a second SOULFUL SUNDAY, a part two of Clear Your Emotional Clutter. Guest presenter, Ruthie Kukoff, interior designer, and space clearer, will help you to clear the clutter in your home.

A few buds, blossoming in my garden.

A few buds, blossoming in my garden.

Like our gardens and homes, our bodies also need the equivalent of a spring cleaning. When too much ‘emotional clutter’ builds up inside the body, our thinking can become scattered and unclear. Holding on to remnants of the past can keep us from fully living in the present. We can feel weighed down by the emotional baggage we carry.

The relationship we have with our bodies can also be reflected in our homes. When we have difficulty letting go, “piles of stuff’’ can manifest throughout the house. If we neglect our inner life, we may also overlook the care of our personal space. The mess and neglect of our homes can take a toll on the health of our mind, body, and soul.

As a somatic healer and educator, and former interior designer, I am always curious about the relationship between the house we live in and the home within our bodies. I assist my clients in becoming aware of the connection between the two. Over the years of working with clients, several stories stand out about this connection. Here are two that I want to share with you.

After organizing and decluttering a small area of her home, Jill* expressed how “good” she felt in her body. When I asked her to tell me what she meant by good, she said, “clarity in my mind, and a sense of purpose and completion in my stomach. This is what I’m looking for in my life.” She became aware of how her disorganized thoughts were like her disorganized home.

Cheryl* told me how she was driven to clean out closets that were so jammed she could never see what was in them. She described what she felt when opening her newly organized and emptier closets.

“It’s as if the blinders have been taken off, I can see what’s there”. We discussed how her closet cleaning reflected her recent willingness to see and care for the “abused child” she kept hidden for many years. Reconnected to her child-self, she lovingly touched her belly, and felt the space she had created for “her” in her body.

The relationship between the house we live in and the home within our body is both neatly and sometimes messily woven together. When we take the time to listen to our bodies and reflect upon our living space, we can become aware of the connection.

At this month’s Soulful Sunday on March 7th, I will guide you to listen to your body to get in touch with any old, stagnant, emotional energy held in your body. As you listen, I will help you to determine what you need to release it.

Please join me to clear out the old and make room for something new. This will be an opportunity to lighten up and free your body, mind, and soul.
